We know that one key to staying properly hydrated is to have easy access to clean drinking water. But what’s the best way to tote your fluids? There are several options for convenient containers, each coming with its own pros and cons. 

Plastic Bottles  
Reusable plastic water bottles are undeniably convenient. Drop them all you want—there’s no fear of breaking or damaging the container. But is this one handy feature worth the multiple drawbacks?

Petroleum-based products are resource intensive, meaning it takes a whole lot to create just one little bottle. The manufacturing process also generates environmental toxins and the fact is, after disposal, these handy items have a very, very long half-life. Some people feel that plastic bottles absorb odors over time or give off their own “plastic flavor.”

The most notable danger of plastic water bottles is Bisphenol A (BPA). Exposure to this chemical can compromise your endocrine system, exposing you to immune, neurological, reproductive and developmental issues. Plastic chemical compounds increase your risk of diabetes, obesity and even some types of cancers. If you can’t bring yourself to pitch the plastic water bottles, at least go BPA-free.

Stainless Steel 
If you’re looking to invest in a sturdy, reusable bottle, there are many benefits of purchasing a stainless steel option. Ideal for those who are tough on their stuff, these containers are made of food-grade material, are odor-free, and can keep water cool for extended periods of time.

The primary downside of stainless bottles is mostly aesthetic; dents and scratches are to be expected after continuous use. But if you don’t plan on dropping them from great heights or banging them across pavement, stainless steel reusable bottles are easy on the environment and your body. Spend the few extra bucks in nature’s favor!

Glass 
Glass water bottles are BPA- and PVC-free and easy to clean, but like all glass, they do shatter. Even though many companies fit their glass containers with sleeves to reduce the chances of damage due to high impact, there is still a risk of breakage. They may not be the best choice for kids.

Once again, this option can be more expensive than plastic, but the pros are prominent. Glass bottles are not lined with harmful sealants, and they won’t absorb the flavors of what you’re drinking. However, glass bottles are heavier than most other options, and may not be your top choice if you’re a butterfingers.
